About Us

Kimberley is situated at an elevation of 3,678 feet (1,121 metres) above sea level, making it one of the highest cities in British Columbia. Since Sacred Heart Parish is perched on Church Hill, our pastor, Fr. Obi, often jokes that we are the church closest to God. It's a lighthearted remark that our parish family has come to cherish.

The first Augustinian Pope, Leo XIV is the second Roman Pontiff - after Pope Francis - from the Americas. Unlike Jorge Mario Bergoglio, however, the 69-year-old Robert Francis Prevost is from the northern part of the continent, though he spent many years as a missionary in Peru before being elected head of the Augustinians for two consecutive terms.

The journey that led Fr. Obi to the priesthood began in 1999, during a time of deep searching for life’s true meaning. In that search, he encountered Jesus, the source of true, enduring, and lasting joy. Walking with Christ — not in a superficial or easy way, but in the daily companionship of faith — he discovered the answers to the questions that shaped his path. In Jesus, he found his identity, his purpose, and the conviction that authentic life is found in living for others.

In addition to the home church in Kimberley, Sacred Heart Parish supports two important Mission churches in the East Kootenays.

Most Reverend Gregory Bittman was installed as Bishop of Nelson on April 25, 2018. Bishop Bittman was appointed to the new post by His Holiness Pope Francis on February 6, 2018.
